In September 2013, National Grid launched a two-year project to upgrade the way we read natural gas meters through the installation of an Automated Meter Reading System (AMR). To date, nearly 500,000 National Grid customers on Long Island have been upgraded to this state of the art technology and are enjoying the benefits of AMR
AMR technology allows your meter to be read remotely, from company vehicles equipped with AMR receivers. These receivers read and record your meter usage data as they pass by your home or business without requiring National Grid personnel having to enter your property.
Once installed, you will also be ready to enjoy the benefits of AMR, as soon as the system becomes functional in your area*. These benefits include:
- Improved meter reading accuracy and billing – you will be billed for your actual gas usage – no more estimated bills!
- No need to wait for the meter reader, or remember to unlock gates or lock up pets.
* It may take up to two months for your new meter reading device to become functional. During that time you National Grid’s authorized agent, Precision Pipeline Solutions (PPS) will physically read your meter
What you need to know:
- If you opt out of AMR or you do not permit us to install an AMR meter by by December 31, 2015, a monthly manual meter-reading fee of $7.77 will be applied to your account starting January 1, 2016.
- The AMR installation will be completed by Precision Pipeline Solutions (PPS), an authorized National Grid contractor. All PPS workers carry National Grid contractor identification and their vehicles and uniforms will be marked with both National Grid and PPS logos.
- The installation process will be done at no cost to you between now and December 31, 2015. After December 31, 2015 an additional charge of $95.64 may be assessed to install an AMR enabled meter
- Installation takes about 20-30 minutes to complete.
- If your gas meter is located outside your home, the process does not require PPS to enter your home or business.
- If your gas meter is located inside your home or business, and you are not home when PPS is in your area to upgrade your meter, PPS will leave information on how to schedule an installation appointment if they were unable to access your meter.
- If you choose to opt out of the AMR program now, you must complete and submit an opt-out application form
Note: This program applies only to National Grid natural gas meters. LIPA electric meters are not part of this program. Since Jan. 1, 2014, LIPA electric meters have been be read and maintained by PSEG Long Island.
