This past hockey season, National Grid partnered up with Boston defenseman Andrew Ference to promote energy efficiency to schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
We invited schools across our footprint to submit their ideas for reducing energy – giving the teachers and students creative freedom in their submissions. We received videos, drawings, essays, even a comic book, that touched upon energy reducing ideas such as motion sensor lights, school bike racks, and even painting a black roof white to reflect heat rather than absorb it.
Two winning entries were selected at random: the Community Prep School in Providence, RI, and the Innovation Academy Charter School in Tyngsboro, MA. Both schools submitted short videos to the contest and won the grand prizes: $2,500 and a visit to their school by Andrew Ference. Sixteen other Massachusetts and Rhode Island schools also won $1,000 prizes.
